Breast Cancer

**What is breast cancer? Breast cancer occurs in the breast or breast lobules. After unknown triggers or multiple divisions, it transforms into cancer cells and invades surrounding normal tissues or spreads throughout the body through the blood and lymphatic systems. Therefore, breast cancer first occurs locally in the breast and then spreads throughout the body. The time for treatment is when the breast cancer is localized in the breast or extends to the lymph glands in the armpit.

**Why are more and more people suffering from breast cancer in recent years? The number of older mothers and single women who are getting married at a later age is increasing.
· There are more and more mothers who do not breastfeed.
· Chinese people’s diet is becoming increasingly Westernized, with increased fat intake and changes in health behaviors and lifestyles.
· Lack of awareness about breast cancer and general lack of correct understanding.
· Failure to perform breast self-examination regularly, and high-risk individuals fail to receive examinations on schedule.

**How to detect breast cancer early§ Do a breast self-examination once a month.
§ In addition to monthly breast self-examination, those in high-risk groups should undergo regular annual physician examinations, X-rays, and ultrasound examinations.
§ If a lump or suspected symptoms are found during breast self-examination, you should immediately seek help from a breast oncology specialist or general surgeon for further examination. Do not take any over-the-counter medicines, herbal medicines or ointments to avoid delaying the condition and losing the opportunity for treatment.

**If there is pain in the breast, does it mean that you have breast cancer? Breast cancer does not cause pain in the early stages. The reasons for breast pain are:

§ Cyclic breast pain: Many women will feel swelling and pain in both breasts before menstruation.
§ Ill-fitting bra: too small and too tight.
§ Breast pain caused by infection: acute mastitis.
§ Caused by breast disease: fibrocysts.
§ Caused by trauma: excessive kneading, hitting heavy objects.
§ Caused by emotional factors: emotional frustration and sexual discomfort.
§ Pain can occur with ruptured nipples or engorged breasts.

**Who is more likely to get breast cancer§ I have suffered from unilateral breast cancer, and the chance of getting breast cancer on the other side increases.
§ Have a family member with breast cancer, especially a mother or sister.
§ Those who have early menstruation (under 12 years old) or late menopause (over 55 years old).
§ Those who have never given birth or those who gave birth to their first child after the age of 35.
§ Have suffered from benign breast disease.
§ Obese people.
§ People who regularly consume high-fat foods.
The above average high-risk groups should be tracked and inspected regularly.

**Where to provide free screening services for breast cancer high-risk groups? Target recipients: Breast cancer patients and second-degree relatives over 35 years old, including grandmothers, mothers, and sisters.

Screening items: including physician inspection, palpation, mammography and breast ultrasound examination.

**Where to provide further inspection services?

All hospitals and clinics with general surgery, breast oncology, and special breast clinics can provide further examinations.

**Where to provide breast self-examination guidance and consultation services

Breast self-examination guidance and consultation services are provided by the fifth section of the health bureaus of all counties and cities in the province, the health centers of each town (city) district, or the Maternal and Child Health Research Institute of the Executive Yuan Department of Health.
